Each season, my show covers a different topic and my goal is to spark curiosity, build community, inspire action, and deepen our understanding of the world around us. Let's start this episode by dissecting fear.
Fear is not a stop sign. It's most likely a sign that your stepping outside of your comfort zone, which is exactly where growth happens. Fear can manifest in different ways, procrastination, perfectionism. Doubt, making excuses. Do any of these, as I'm saying these words resonate with you? Is there one that you identify with more so than any of the others?
We just started this episode, but I know one of these words is resonating the most with you so far. [00:02:00] Let's think about how fear It might be causing you to get a little uncomfortable, which is exactly the point of this episode. Fear is what I believe keeps you stuck in your comfort zone. And when you think about it, comfort zone, is it really your fear zone? Is this the area where you are very comfortable? You know what to expect?
You have everything that you can count on. And life is supposedly good, but outside of this circle of comfort is the unknown. It's an unknown world, an unknown realm,
and it may require something of you that is unknown as well. So think about that. Is fear really your comfort zone? Is this comfort zone, your fear zone?
Today's episode, we're tackling something short and simple, moving forward without fear, and I'm going to talk about go to grow. Creating a Go to grow mindset is all about taking action even when you don't feel ready to take that action. Growth doesn't happen from waiting. It happens from movement. Think about even just the basic things that grow People, [00:03:00] animals, plants, none of these things grow unless there's some kind of movement.
They're expanding and that's what growth is. So ask yourself, what's something that you've been thinking about doing but haven't taken an action because of fear? That job that you're looking at going after, you have to go to grow that business that you're looking at starting.
You have to go to grow. Thinking of going back to school. You have to go to grow. Are you thinking of changing careers? You have to go to grow. Thinking of writing that book, starting that podcast. Have a goal. Whatever that goal is, you have to go to grow. This is something that I witnessed in my own life.
This is what I've witnessed people around me, my friends, my family, when they've gone through different circumstances in their life that have been challenging or have been called to do something bigger than where they are right now. And the hesitation arrives. The fear grips them or it can grip them, I should say.
And one thing that I have to remind them of and even [00:04:00] myself sometimes, is you have to go to grow. So I want you to keep saying this in your head. That's why I'm repeating it here. I know it may sound a little redundant, but everything that we're talking about, when that fear locks into you, make sure that you're moving forward without fear, and you are going to go and grow.
What is that thing that has been nagging at you, pulling at your heart, that you can feel down in your stomach, that thing that you've talked yourself out of and decided all the reasons that it won't work even without you doing the work?
What has fear talked you out of? You need to go to grow Going means leaving behind where you are now and finding your edge. And I talk a lot about this in my book, finding Your Edge, how to Unlock Your Talent and Purpose. The edge is the end of one thing and the beginning of another. This is what it's like to step out of that comfort slash fear, fear zone and actually take the steps towards growth.
It's the beginning of a new life and the leaving of the old life behind. You're answering the calling. You are at the cusp of [00:05:00] transforming your life. So go to grow. But how do you go to grow? Write down these letters. I said it at the top of this episode. FWOF, forward Without fear, you have to move forward without fear.
'cause it's one thing to say go to grow. But how do I do it? It's just moving forward and moving forward without fear. And when it comes to fear, I notice that there are three traps that usually occur. The first trap is fear of failure. Many people fear failure so much that they don't even start.
But I'd like to reframe that. Think of it as failure isn't the opposite of success. It's a part of it. If you were to research some of your favorite people in the world that you consider leaders or successful people in, no matter what their discipline is, I can guarantee you that 100% of those people will talk about they couldn't have been where they are today or have the success that they have without overcoming fear number one, but also experiencing many failures, not just one or two failures, but [00:06:00] many failures.
Looking at my own life today, I run a successful digital marketing consultancy. But that's been the result of me moving forward without fear, even when circumstances were stacked against me. And even when I suffered personal and financial loss, I kept moving with faith and hope over fear because I knew this was not going to be the best that life got.
My vision was so much bigger than what my circumstances were at the time. I looked around, things were not going my way, but I knew that where I was at that point in time, this was not as good as it gets. And that might be resonating with you right now. You might be in a situation right now where you're looking around.
Everything seems impossible. The options seem to be closing down. The walls seem to be closing in and you might feel like tapping out and just saying, forget it. I'm just gonna continue status quo and doing what I'm doing. But I would say that there's something on your heart for a reason, and you need to follow that and go forward without fear.
Faith over fear is what allowed me to start my new business after a previous [00:07:00] business failed. Like my current company, ample Marketing, is not my first business. My first business was called 10th Planet Productions, Where I worked with independent artists and help them with music, production, marketing, everything they needed really to start out in the music industry.
But that business failed. And as a result of that, I kept going. I worked a corporate job for a while until I figured out what my next move would be, and eventually I started my second company, which is Ampla Marketing. But that couldn't have come about if I did not move forward without fear. Moving forward without fear is what allowed me to write two bestselling books and start my podcast Moving forward without fear allowed me to unlock a confidence that I never had in my life. Because once you start overcoming fear, doors keep opening, and that is what you will find once you start moving forward. It doesn't mean that there won't be some setbacks, but it does mean that there will be movement and doors will be opening and you will learn about yourself along the way, Fear of failure was not [00:08:00] something that really held me back, but the second trap probably held me back even more. And that second trap is fear of judgment. This is when you worry about what other people think, especially when you step outside of the norm. let's reframe this too though.
Fear of judgment. People are so focused on their own lives to watch your every move. And if they do, I. That says more about them than it does you think about this. How much time do you spend at your home plotting against other people and dissecting their lives?
You probably don't. So while we're sitting here thinking, oh, this person may say this about me, or they may think this about me, these people, especially adults, you are, you're an adult. If you're listening to this, you're probably not a child. But if you are. This is some wisdom for you. If you're listening, you're probably an adult and you know you have so much going on in your very own life.
The struggles that you deal with every day, you might think sporadically about a person or judge in a moment, a person, but you're not latching onto that. And really, I. Letting that just take over your whole life. Nobody is doing that to you [00:09:00] either. So if you are being judged, it might be incremental and in the moment, but beyond that, people are not thinking about you.
They're thinking about what they're going to do today, what they need to get done, and their list of to-dos and things that they have to take care of. That first trap of fear of failure, it can actually relate to judgment because it's if I fail, how will people judge me? So I could see how trap one and trap two are related if it's a fear of failure or fear of judgment. But again, I probably struggle more with fear of judgment more than I do with the fear of failure.
And I have to remind myself of the same things that I'm telling you right now. Now, a few years ago I did improv for a couple of years and this was something I stepped out You really have to be ready for the judgment of others. Being a performer, making up something on the spot, trying to be funny on the spot, coming up with new ideas, and just vibing off your other castmates on stage, on the spot.
There is a lot mentally and emotionally that you have to overcome to do. Improv. What if my joke falls flat? What if I look ridiculous on [00:10:00] stage? There's so many things that go on that are sporadic and unplanned. So doing improv actually helped me get over my fear of judgment, which sometimes I do struggle with, to be honest with you.
But that was very tremendous in helping me because you're gonna have days, you're gonna watch your fellow castmates just bomb. They're gonna have an off night or a bad joke that just doesn't go over well, and you're realize that this is part of the human experience. We're going to make mistakes, and there will be an audience at times when we make mistakes.
But you just keep moving forward without fear. There are things that if you know it in your heart that this is what you're going after and people want to talk about you in a negative way or try to degrade you, you have to stick to what you know to be true about yourself.
As it relates to improv, what I found is that even when I felt like I did a terrible job, people were still entertained and that was the goal in the first place. We tend to be so much harder on ourselves than anyone else ever could be. You have to let go of that fear of judgment.
People are gonna make their comments, but they're not gonna lose any sleep over you Like that
people can't help [00:11:00] but judge other people, but don't give other people the satisfaction or the gratification of allowing their judgments to shut down your progress. Imagine someone telling Steve Jobs. That, oh, you're gonna create a phone. That can also be a map and a computer and a music player. That's a stupid idea.
And what if Steve Jobs were to listen to that and be like, oh, that's a stupid idea. I'm not going to invent that. We would never have the iPhone. And probably Androids, because Androids have copied a lot of iPhones. Sorry, Android folks. But imagine if someone went to George Washington Carver and said, you're gonna do what with some peanuts and question or ridiculed.
Which they probably did, but he continued to go and make peanut butter. We would not have had one of these most amazing creations ever. If these people, including yourself, let other people's judgment or ridicule affect what their path was. Live your life and answer the voice that is calling inside of you.
The third trap that I see when it comes to fear is fear of uncertainty. Many people hesitate to take [00:12:00] steps or take action because they don't know the full path ahead, so it's uncertain, but let's reframe this one as well. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step. I've known people that have not followed their dreams.
Because they don't have everything planned out to a T. But the thing is, when you follow your dreams, you're entering into a world of uncertainty. And if you're a risk averse person, it will be harder than people who are not risk averse. But that's okay. Just go after it. You won't have all the answers up front, but new doors will open some of the tools that you thought you would need during this path or this journey.
You end up actually not needing them. You also gain new skills and learn about yourself along the way. So even if you can't see it, and I can tell you from my own experience with. Two businesses that I've started writing books and living a few different professional careers during my lifetime. I had an idea of what I was going to do, but as I started on that journey, things shifted along the way.
Even the way I run my company right now, it looks very different from [00:13:00] what I first thought it was going to look like. But you adjust and adapt, but you don't make that progress if you don't take that first step. So instead of saying, what if I fail? Say, what if this changes everything for the better? Let's look at like instead of the uncertainty piece, I can't see everything that happens, so therefore I'm not going to do anything.
What if it, what if you embraced it differently and said, what if the things that I don't see that happen are actually beyond the vision that I'm capable of even comprehending right now? And just move forward with faith and moving forward without fear.
Now let's talk about five ways to move forward without fear. The first one is to make fear a signal for action. So instead of letting fear stop you in your tracks, use that as it a sign that you're on the edge of growth. And the biggest transformations in life can happen right after your fear. If that fear is digging into that is not your sign to shut down, that is your sign to lean into it and overcome that fear and not let it control you.[00:14:00]
The second way to move forward without fear is to create a go to grow plan. We've been talking about Go to grow earlier in this episode. So when you create that plan of the things that you want to do, that you're trying to pursue, to fulfill your passions and your talents and your purpose, break down those goals into smaller steps.
For example, if you wanna start a business, the first step is not launch it tomorrow, But it's planning out how you're going to research it, how you're going to connect it, and how you're going to plan it. What is the step-by-step process of that? And there's tools out there if you can't think of it all. Use tools that are available online today. Then take small actions with this plan consistently, whether it's daily or several times a week.
Make sure that you have a plan where you are putting in consistent work to go after it, and that is how you go to grow. Keep giving yourself tasks to do that are marching you further down the field with that plan.
The third way to move forward without fear is to have accountability and support.
Surround yourself with people who push you forward. These could be mentors, friends, or [00:15:00] coaches. Listen to the other episodes of my podcast because I have some other tips about that. Having that support and having these other people in your life that can also not only help to hold you accountable, but can bring out some of the better aspects about yourself that you may not be able to see.
The fourth way to move forward without fear is to write notes to yourself. And this is something that I do i'll write notes and reminders in my phone that go off all day that remind me of who I am and what the best version of myself looks like. You can also put post-it notes on your computer, on your mirror, on your workspace, in your car, on your dashboard, wherever.
But these notes that affirm who you are, what your goals are. So that you don't lose sight of where you're going in life and this also helps your mindset to not be taken over by the fear, but you're telling yourself these mantras, you're telling yourself these words of affirmation that can help you to overcome fear.
The thing about these affirmations is that it has been scientifically proven to create new neuro [00:16:00] paths within your brain to rewire your brain for positivity. So there is science behind this, and whenever you have this to counter that fear, you actually are reworking how your brain physically looks. The fifth way to move forward without fear is to pray or meditate on overcoming your fears.
So praying for that peace, that strength, or meditating on not letting fear overtake you and focusing on how your life can look if you were to overcome fear. These are the tools that you can use to move forward without fear. now we're coming to the reflective questions of the episode, and there are three. So if you haven't. Written anything down in this episode so far. This is where you would pull out that pen and paper and write this down. You can also pause after each of these questions. Rewind it 10 seconds to listen to it again.
But the first question is, if fear wasn't a factor, what bold decision would you make today? Second question is, what's one past experience where you faced fear and came out [00:17:00] stronger? And
M-Track 2X2-3: you know,
Jeremy: I asked that 'cause you need that evidence to remind you of who you are and how you've overcome fear before.
The third question is, what is one step that you will take this week to move forward without fear? So write that down. So in closing, fear does not mean stop. Fear means go. The moment that you take that first step, The fear starts losing its grip on you. You have to go to grow and you don't grow.
By waiting, you grow, by going, moving forward without fear is the only way. Thanks for tuning into the Jeremy Hazelwood show.
